Listen. People want and need to be heard. Listen to hear and understand, not to respond.
Repeat back to the person talking about what you heard. This is a great way to reinforce that you listen attentively to your child, a spouse, a friend, or a team member.
It also ensures that you clearly understand what the other person is saying. The simple act of deep listening can eliminate many dust-ups and hurt feelings.
