Surrender.
It was three days after my house burned to the ground. I reeked of smoke and hadn’t taken a shower in those three days. I went to my gym with some new clothes I had just bought at Target; mine had burned in the fire.
I stepped into the shower, and it hit me. With a few exceptions, everything I owned was gone. All my “things” had been reduced to ash. I cried, but not tears of loss. Because you see, at that moment, I felt so much freedom…
I didn’t have a house to maintain…
I didn’t have clothes to launder…
I didn’t have furniture to dust…
I didn’t have beautiful area rugs to vacuum…
I didn’t have art to look after…
I wasn’t responsible for taking care of any of those “things.”
All that I lost set me free. It was a great reminder that the things could be replaced, that trust in something BIGGER than me was essential to my contentment, and that loss is a gateway to freedom.
So my friend, take some time today to reflect on ‘everything you’ve ever lost’ and give it permission to set you free.
