Winter Solstice

The winter solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun.  For that hemisphere, the winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky.  Today is that day in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Great Conjunction

The other amazing thing that is happening this evening is the great conjunction.  The 2020 great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will be the closest since 1623 and the closest observable since 1226! 2020’s extra-close Jupiter–Saturn conjunction won’t be matched again until the Jupiter–Saturn conjunction of March 15, 2080.  So please do not miss this historical event.  It hasn’t happened in 800 years and it won’t happen again for another 60 years!
